Dr. Richard D. Schubart

A native of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Dr. Richard Schubart earned his BA in history at Kenyon College and subsequently his MA and PhD in American history at the State University of New York, Binghamton.. He was appointed to the faculty of Phillips Exeter Academy in 1973 where he has taught in the history department, been the head of Amen and Dunbar Hall dormitories, and coached the varsity boys tennis team and girls varsity basketball teams. Rick has also served as the coordinator of the Exeter Humanities Program, the director of the Exeter Elderhostel Academy, as well as the Dean of Admissions, chair of the History Department, and Director of the Washington Intern Program on Capitol Hill during his thirty five years at Phillips Exeter Academy. Rick is also a founder of the Academy Summer Alumni Symposium on Gettysburg and the Civil War and in 2005 Rick was named to the Bates-Russell Distinguished Faculty Professorship.

Outside of Exeter, Rick has served as the executive director and vice-chairman of the board of trustees for The Association of Boarding Schools and was previously the chairman of the board of the Federation of American and International Schools, both in Washington, DC. Rick was also a member of the SSAT Board in Princeton, NJ. Presently Rick serves as a founding director and trustee of the IECA Foundation, the Bronx Preparatory Charter School in New York City, the Durango Institute in Colorado and the Nasu-Kaijo Academy in Japan. In January of 2007 Rick was appointed to the board of advisors for the new Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Rick has also consulted on the development of comparative educational programs for international schools including the Dar Al Fikr School in Saudi Arabia, the Ake Panya School in Thailand, the Soros Foundation Teacher-Exchange program in Budapest, Hungary, the Nichinoken Educational Foundation in Tokyo, Japan, and the Fudan University International School in Shanghai, China. He is currently working with the National Association of Independent Schools in Washington, DC on model curriculum for international education and student leadership initiatives as part of the NAIS Challenge 20/20 program and the Global Education Summit. Rick also chaired the 75th Anniversary commemoration of the Harkness table seminar method of teaching and learning in 2006 – 2007.

A scholar of early American and Civil War history, Rick was named a Madison Fellow in Constitutional Studies in 1987. He has worked with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Endowment for Humanities, the New Hampshire Humanities Council, the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, the Gilder-Lehrman Institute, the Gettysburg Visitor Center and Foundation, as well as the Strawbery Banke Museum and the American Independence Museum in New Hampshire.. In 2008, Rick was named a founding trustee of the New Hampshire Supreme Court Society and Governor John Lynch appointed Rick to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission through 2010.
Rick is married to Caren Nelson, a school psychologist and director of special education programs. Together, Rick and Caren have three children, Darcy. Lindsey and Nelson.
