The New Hampshire Supreme Court Society
About the project

Members of the New Hampshire Court Society are hard at work on a number of projects. This page contains a brief description of the Society's current projects, links to more information, and contacts for each endeavor.

Members should feel free to contact the individuals coordinating the projects if they have interest in contributing ideas or volunteer assistance. The all-volunteer society depends on the efforts and dues of its members to make its projects a reality.

Curriculum Project

The Society is working on a school curriculum project which focuses on the judicial system. A Think Tank convened in late-2008 to discuss the status of civics education in New Hampshire. The report is available here.

Exhibitions

The Supreme Court Society was launched with an exhibition of works by Chief Justice Robert Peaslee. The Society will continue to develop exhibitions for the general public. Susan Leidy of the Currier is working with a UNH student and an advisory committee on preparing a series of exhibitions. Some of the ideas being discussed are an exhibition focusing on the famous Dartmouth College Case argued by Daniel Webster and an exhibition on United States Supreme Court Justices who hailed from New Hampshire (hint: there's more than one!).

Megan De Vorsey of Franklin Pierce Law School is exploring a possible exhibition on Justice Elwin L. Page, a prominent Lincoln scholar and student of New Hampshire legal history; such an exhibition would be timely for the Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration in 2008-2009.

Oral History Project

Many prominent members of the New Hampshire Bar and Bench have been subjects of videotaped interviews over the years, including Chief Justice John W. King, Chief Justice Grimes, Judge Margaret Q. Flynn, Pauline S. Merrill, Jack Middleton, Dudley Orr, John R. McLane, Jr, Kenneth Graf, William S. Green, Fred Upton, Joseph Millimet, Dort Bigg, and many more. In addition to the subjects, many of the interviewers have also become very prominent lawyers and judges in their own right, including Judge Kathleen A. McGuire, Justice Richard Galway, Judge Martin Loughlin, Kimon Zachos, and Charles A. DeGrandpre.

The Supreme Court Society is working with the Bar Foundation to make these materials available to a wider audience, as well as continuing the tradition of oral history that the Bar Foundation began.
